Vision & Hearing Screenings

Reported by christine_binderup@ipsd.org on 1/8/20

Vision & Hearing Screenings will be held on January 13 through January 21st. May Watts School will conduct Vision and Hearing Screenings. These screening tests are mandated by the Department of Public Health at specific times during a child’s educational experience. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they have them in school on testing day. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that evaluation is on file at the school. Vision and hearing screenings are not an option. If an examination report is not on file at the school for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group will be screened.

The mandated screenings are as follows:
Kindergarten – Vision and Hearing
Grade 1 – Hearing only
Grade 2 – Vision (with color discrimination) and Hearing
Grade 3 – Hearing only

We will also screen all students with IEP’s— 504 students— foster children and any student new to the district who does not have a vision or hearing examination on file with the school.
