ABOUT MAY WATTS

Born on May 1, 1893, May Thielgaard Watts lived to become a noted naturalist and the founder of the Illinois Prairie Path.

The 35 year Naperville resident began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in the community. Before her death in 1975 at the age of 82, she was appointed to and served for 20 years as a staff naturalist at the Morton Arboretum.

Her Naperville home still can be seen on Jefferson Avenue, east of Washington Street.

May Watts received innumerable awards for her work and was honored by the United States Department of the Interior in 1971 for her efforts in founding the Prairie Path.

Most recently, she honored by Indian Prairie School District 204 by naming our school after her in May of 1989.

Students are expected to dress appropriately for recess with hats, gloves, boots and winter coats.

LUNCH/RECESS

Students in grades 1-5 may elect to eat lunch at school or at home on a regular basis, if they live within walking distance. Daily hot lunch program is available. Sack lunches are brought and milk may be purchased. Bussed students will remain at school for lunch. All students remaining at school for lunch are under the direction of the lunch supervisors. Lunch period includes a 20-25 minute eating time and a 10-15 minute outside recess.

When a student forgets a lunch, he/she will be allowed to call home. When bringing this lunch or any other lunch, please label it CLEARLY with the child's name and class.

If lunch can not be secured in time, we will ask other students to share their lunches so your child will not go hungry.

Please remember to provide all necessary utensils (spoons, forks, napkins, etc.), as we are unable to provide such items for 500+ students on a daily basis.

SAFETY SUGGESTIONS:

The responsibility for safety is a shared one between parents, students and the school. We work together with the cooperation and assistance of the City of Naperville to develop safety guidelines and procedures. School crossing guards are on duty to assist students to and from school at the following locations: Whispering Hills Drive & Sequoia, Whispering Hills Drive & Meadowland, and Whispering Hills Drive and Ada.

Students and parents are encouraged to review and practice safe routes to and from school prior to the beginning of the year.

SAFETY GUIDELINES:

Follow safe route map.
Always remain on sidewalks.
Obey crossing guards.
Cross only at marked crosswalks.
Look both directions.
Use the "buddy system."
Follow posted traffic signals.
Car pool when possible.
Use side streets for parking.
Prearrange pickup locations.
Be patient, cautious and courteous.

SUPPLIES

A list of school supplies was distributed as part of the registration packet. These items are the responsibility of the student throughout the year. Additional supplies may be requested during the school year for special projects and activities.

BUILDING ACCESS/VISITS

All outside doors except the Main Office entry doors will be locked at all times. Visitors will therefore be required to enter through the front of the building.

All visitors to the buildings are to report to the Main Office. All visitors will be required to sign in at the Main Office and wear identification tags during their visit. Upon leaving the building, all visitors must sign out in the Main Office.

Section 24-25 School Code of Illinois requires any person entering a public school building must identify him/herself and the purpose of the entry.

INDIAN PRAIRIE COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT 204 - Policy #5380

"The District encourages visits by the parents/guardians, citizens and taxpayers to District Schools. Parents of students attending the school have special rights and responsibilities, in addition to those of taxpayers generally, to keep themselves informed as to the day-to-day operation of the school. In receiving visitors, District personnel shall be cognizant of student welfare and safety and continuity of the educational program. All visitors shall report to the Building Principal's office. The following guidelines shall govern school visits:

  1. Visitors shall pre-arrange visits to the school with the Building Principal at least 24 hours prior to the visit.

  2. Absent unusual circumstances previously discussed with the Building Principal, school visits shall be limited to 1 hour per day.

  3. School visits shall generally be limited to adults. Parents should avoid visiting school accompanied by siblings or other children.

  4. School visits to individual classrooms should generally be made only when the regularly assigned teacher is present.

  5. School and classroom visits shall not be disruptive or in any way interfere with the instructional program. All visits and visitors shall be subject to the authority of the Building Principal who may restrict or limit visitors as he/she considers necessary.

  6. Visits to school by a student's friends and associates are not permitted except by special permission of the building principal and/or teacher, or in the case of a special event for which a general invitation has been issued. A student must obtain permission at least one day in advance for such visits except when a special invitation has been issued."

PARKING FACILITIES

The driveway in front is a one way drive only with the entrance on the south directly across from Meadowland.

Parking is permitted in available spaces between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and is limited to 15 minutes. All other parking is in the rear of the building or on Whispering Hills Drive in areas designated by the Naperville Department of Traffic. (See Page 25 for diagram.) Please do not park in the front driveway along the curb, as this is a fire lane and for buses only. Please do not drop off students in the front circle driveway. All students MUST be dropped off on Whispering Hills Drive in the designated areas.

BICYCLE RIDING

Students in grade 5 only have the opportunity to ride bicycles to school provided they pass the written test administered by May Watts School staff.

Bikes are to be walked on school property and locked in the bike rack during the day. Children should obey all traffic rules when riding to and from school. Parents should determine the shortest and safest route. City of Naperville Safe Route maps are available to assist in your decision.

Due to the large number of walkers using Whispering Hills Drive going north to Sequoia and south to Ada and the narrow sidewalks, it is requested that students walk their bikes to the corner of Sequoia and Whispering Hills Drive and Ada & Whispering Hills.

STUDENT ABSENCES/TARDIES/ILLNESSES

Maximum success can best be attained through regular attendance; therefore, it is of the utmost importance that students be in class. Parents of students, or those having legal custody, have the responsibility for their children's regular school attendance consistent with Illinois School Code. The school monitors attendance records quarterly and contacts the parents of students who are not in compliance with the code. However, children should not attend school when ill. Absences for reasons other than illness should be minimized.

Upon returning after being absent due to an illness, students are expected to present a parent's note to the teacher indicating the reason for the absence.

Children should be fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

READMISSION TO CLASS FOLLOWING AN ILLNESS

A student who has been absent from school more than five (5) days or who has had a communicable disease must present a physician's release before being admitted to school. Parents should present the release to the nurse or health aide in the main office.

A student who has been absent for less than five (5) days may be readmitted to class with a written excuse from his/her parent(s) or guardian(s).

Children shall be readmitted to school according to the isolation/exclusion requirements in Rules and Regulations for the Control of Communicable Diseases, published by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

The Board has adopted a policy (500.84) which delineates the steps to be taken if a student or employee is suspected of having or has a confirmed case of any communicable disease. The policy is based on seeking professional medical opinions and recommendations.

The school nurse should be notified of all communicable diseases.

Disease Exclude from Class? Duration
Chicken Pox Yes 24 hrs. after last pox scabs over
Fifth Disease * Yes Until diagnosed
Hepatitis Yes Readmitted with doctor's permit
Impetigo Yes Until under a doctor's care
Measles (regular) ** Yes 4 days after appearance of rash
Meningitis Yes Readmitted with doctor's permit
Mononucleosis No Diagnosis from physician needed
Ringworm Yes Readmitted with doctor's permit
Scarlet Fever Yes Readmitted with doctor's permit
Strep Infections Yes Until 24 hours after start of medication

(1) Fifth Disease is a contagious, red scaly skin eruption.
(2) All non-immunized children must be excluded from school and a written notice sent to parents stating that the child is excluded until acceptable proof of immunity is presented or until twenty-one (21) days after the onset of the last reported case of measles.

Conjunctivitis: All children with tearing, irritation, and/or redness of one or both eyes will be sent home until a physician deems a child is non-contagious, or the child has been on medication for twenty-four (24) hours.

Fever: The most common cause of fever in children is infection. Children with fevers over 100° will be considered contagious and should be kept at home.

Lice: A child who has lice, nits, or egg cases will be sent home. The child should be treated under the direction of a physician. The school district follows the direction of the DuPage County Health Department, which requires that a child be totally free of nits, lice, or egg cases for re-admittance to school.

Rash: All children with undiagnosed rashes will be sent home until the rash is diagnosed and a physician deems the child is non-contagious.

IMPORTANT: If your child is well enough to attend school, they should be prepared to participate in the normal school day activities. This includes going outside for all recesses and Physical Education classes.

If your child is absent, you must call the school by 9:30 a.m. at 428-6700. We are required by state law, to attempt to contact you.

ON DAYS WHEN THERE ARE PARTIES PLANNED FOR THE CHILDREN (i.e. HALLOWEEN, VALENTINES' DAY) AND YOUR CHILD IS ILL, PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILD LATE THAT DAY SO HE/SHE CAN ATTEND THE PARTY.

Tardiness creates problems for your child, the class, and teacher. Consequently, if after the teacher addresses tardiness with no success, continued tardiness will be addressed by the principal.

A student is considered truant who is absent without valid cause for more than 10% of the regular attendance days. Supportive services for truants and chronic truants are available through the DuPage County Educational Service Region in cooperation with the DuPage County Truant office upon referral by the School District.

PUPIL ACCIDENTS AND ILLNESSES

In case of accident or illness of a student at school, this procedure will be followed:

  1. Provide immediate first aid.

  2. Contact parent.

  3. Contact school nurse (depending upon the severity).

  4. If the parents can not be reached, the emergency contacts on the registration form will be notified. Please be certain these contacts are current.

  5. If the parents or emergency contacts are not available, the family doctor is notified.

  6. If the parents, emergency contacts or doctor is unavailable, the local hospital, 911, and/or doctor is called.

School District 204 does not assume any financial obligation.

NOTE: PLEASE MAINTAIN AN UPDATED REGISTRATION FORM THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH EMERGENCY TELEPHONES AND CONTACTS. THIS IS FOR THE PROTECTION OF YOUR CHILD.

MEDICATION

If your child will need to have medication administered during the school day (either prescription or over-the counter with a doctor's note), it is important that you review the policy concerning medication in the District Parent - Student Handbook.

Effective immediately, absolutely no medication will be dispensed by school personnel without a doctor's note, even for one day.

In addition, it would be extremely helpful to the school staff if a separate bottle of medication was requested from the pharmacy so that the medicine can be left at school and not sent home every night. Do not send more than one (1) week's dosage at a time.

No cough drops or throat lozenges may be taken by students or dispensed by teachers or office personnel.

If there is any change in the student's health which affects his/her ability to take physical education, or if he/she is placed on medication or has a change of medication, it is the parents' responsibility to provide written medical verification.

Medication permission forms and guidelines are attached to the back of this handbook for your use, if necessary.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXCUSES

A written parent request for exclusion from physical education is valid for up to 3 class periods and should be presented to the health office. A physician's note is required beyond the 3 day period.

NURSE

A full time health aide and/or nurse will be available on a daily basis. If a student becomes ill in school, he/she will be sent to the nurse's office. The health aide/nurse will decide what should be done to help your child.

RELEASED TIME FOR STUDENTS

School District Policy #5060 states: "A student will be granted released time and be excused from school for religious observances required by the tenets of his/her religion, provided that the obligation can not be met outside regular school hours. A student will be released and be excused from school for the serious illness or death of a member of his/her family. A student will not be released from school to take private lessons (e.g., music, dancing, sports instruction, etc) on a regular basis. Any special requests for released time for a student should be addressed to the building principal. Students who need to be dismissed for emergencies during the school day will be released from the Main Office only. No student will be released directly from the classroom.

EARLY DISMISSALS:

Parents are asked to make every effort to schedule appointments for children during non-school times. Early dismissal requests for emergency situations and medical appointments should be sent to the classroom teacher prior to the dismissal. Parents must report to the main office to request the release of the student. A child will be released only to a parent unless other arrangements have been made. All students are required to be signed out in the office before dismissal.

COMPLETION OF FORMS

If you are requesting teachers to complete forms regarding your child for outside agencies, including evaluations but not limited to the following (i.e. doctor requests, Connors Rating Scale, ACTERS Rating Scale, etc.), it will be necessary for you to complete a "Release for Information" form (Form 20) prior to making such a request. These release forms are available in the Office. Teachers will need a minimum of 5 working days to complete these forms.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is given for an absence of 2 days or more. If your child is absent for 2 or more days, and you would like homework, please call before 9:15 a.m. and arrange for someone to pick up at the end of the school day.

In case of an extended illness, please keep in contact with the school. We will help keep your child current with his/her class work.

If a physician has determined that the absence will be longer than 2 weeks (10 consecutive days) a homebound tutor will be available. Please contact the school office in this event.

Homework assignments will not be made before children leave for vacations which are taken during time school is in session. Children will be given additional time upon returning from vacation to make up any work which has been missed.

DISCIPLINE

We believe and expect that all students can behave appropriately at school. We will not allow any student to disrupt the teaching-learning time. We continue to promote the positive approaches by recognizing the students who behave appropriately. Our goal is to provide a safe, organized and positive learning environment.

Classroom discipline plans are established by the teachers with rules and consequences. Consequences include verbal warnings, time out, parent conferences, and in or out of school detentions. Students with frequent behavioral problems or severe disruptions will be immediately referred to the principal for suspensions or expulsions.

BIRTHDAY RECOGNITION

Birthdays are a special event for students and we would be happy to celebrate your child's birthday at school if you wish. The school provides each student on his/her birthday (or on the day they wish to celebrate if the birthday falls on a weekend or during the summer) with a birthday pencil and a card to be signed by classmates and staff members.

Due to a variety of medical concerns, birthday treats (food items) will not be distributed. To keep disruptions to a minimum, we ask that parents refrain from sending "tokens" or "loot bags" to distribute to classmates as well.

Invitations to birthday parties are to be handled by you. Invitations will not be handed out at school. This is to avoid hurt feelings which can result for those children who do not receive an invitation.

BOOK FINES

Students who lose or misuse books will be charged an additional fee based on the decreased life of the book. This includes library books as well as textbooks. Reasonable wear is accepted, but fines will be imposed for excessive wear or damage. Fines are made at the teacher's and principal's discretion.

TORNADO / SEVERE WEATHER

May Watts School is equipped with a 10-10 System for receiving severe weather bulletins. In addition, we will seek support from local Civil Defense warning systems.

TORNADO WATCH

Regular classes and school dismissal procedures in operation. Normal activity continues within the classroom.

TORNADO WARNING

Students directed to areas of safety within the building and retained regardless of dismissal time.

Parents who wish to pick up their child during a Tornado Warning must sign out in the main office. You will not be permitted to take another parent's child without written permission. No buses will be released during a Tornado Warning. Procedures and plans are posted in all school areas.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM

If there is a severe thunderstorm at mid-day (kindergarten dismissal) or at the end of the day, all walkers will be held until the rain subsides.

FIRE DRILLS

Fire drills are practiced routinely throughout the school year. Fire drill procedures and exit guidelines are posted in all school areas.

PARENT-TEACHER ORIENTATION

Within the first month of school, you will be invited to a grade level orientation evening. Teachers will present curriculum outlines, grade level organization patterns, academic and behavior expectations and general building procedures. This is a valuable evening for an overview of the programs and to meet the May Watts staff. It is an important time for parents and teachers to begin the working partnership.

This formal orientation is a time when students are not invited.

OPEN HOUSE

During March, a special opportunity is scheduled for both parents and students to come to school and experience together the learning environment of May Watts. This is an informal type evening to visit all areas of the building.

CLASSROOM PARTIES

The PTA provides for 3 classroom parties during the school year. These are Halloween, December holiday parties and Valentines' Day parties. A.M. kindergarten parties are held from 10:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and all other grades parties are held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:10 p.m.

LOST AND FOUND

Please take special care in clearly labeling all school clothing, gym shoes, supplies and materials with the child's name. The number of unclaimed "lost and found" items is unbelievable. The Lost and Found is located in the Library Media Center.

TELEPHONE USAGE/MESSAGES

Our primary goal is to educate students. To help accomplish this goal, it is important to avoid classroom disruptions. It is for this reason that parent cooperation is requested in helping students be aware of dismissal procedures, after school events and other special arrangements BEFORE coming to school in the morning.

  1. Students should not expect to use the telephone.

  2. Students will not be called from class to answer the telephone unless it is an emergency.

  3. Messages will not be delivered unless it is an emergency.

  4. Plans for after school should be made before school.

  5. Teachers will not be called from class. Due to arrival/dismissal duties assigned to teachers, they are not able to take phone calls from 8:40 a.m. to 9:05 a.m. or from 3:35 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

  6. A pay telephone is available near the gym for public use. No student should have to use the pay telephone during the school day.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

If your child will not be riding his/her bus home, it is necessary for you to send a written note. No bus student is permitted to change buses to go to another student's house to play or for other social events. Transportation arrangements for these reasons are strictly the responsibility of the parents.

Any notes being sent to school listing days your child will not be riding the bus home MUST INDICATE THE EXACT DATES.

NO STUDENTS WHO WALK TO SCHOOL ARE PERMITTED TO RIDE THE BUSES FOR ANY REASON DUE TO INSURANCE LIABILITY.

Please refer to the Indian Prairie School District Parent/Student handbook for additional transportation regulations.

A copy of this handbook was sent home on the first day of school with your child.

District #204 contracts bus service with the VanCom/Laidlaw Company. Routes and schedules are developed by them. Questions concerning the bus service may be directed to the Transportation Supervisor at 904-0900. Please review the District 204 Handbook concerning bus conduct and safety guidelines.

Please remember that only early dismissal days (teacher-inservice days), kindergarten bus students will ride home on the regular bus they come to school on. There will not be a kindergarten take home bus. They will be dismissed at 12:00 noon with Grades 1 through 5 and will be dropped off at the stops they use to take the bus to school with the other students. There will not be any kindergarten take home buses on these days.

DAY CARE INFORMATION

If your child is to be transported to or from school by private day care (Childrens' World, YMCA, etc), it is necessary for us to have on file written notification from you stating your child's name, name of day care, days transported, and the telephone number of the day care.

You must notify both the day care center and the office of any changes in your child's day care schedule.

It is the day care center's responsibility for the timely pick up and delivery of your child. Any continuous late arrivals/pick ups will result in a phone call to the parents from the Office.

INFORMATION ON SCHOOL CLOSING

In case of bad weather or dangerous road conditions, school closing or early dismissals may be announced. Do not call your school, but tune your radio to one of the following stations:

WKKD FM 95.9,            WMAQ 670 AM,          WGN 720 AM,         WYSY 108FM

FIELD TRIPS

All student field trips require a signed permission form from the parents. We ask your cooperation in returning these to the teacher 3 days prior to the field trip. Please put all money for these trips in a sealed envelope.

All payments for field trips should be made by check to: May Watts School.

GRADES

If your child is absent on the last day of school when they are issued, the report card will be mailed. Please do not ask for another student to bring it home for your child.

RELOCATION

If your family is moving, please advise the Office as soon as possible, as the Office needs a minimum of 10 working days in order to get school files updated. You will be given a transfer out form and health records to hand-carry. Official school records will be mailed upon receipt of a formal written request from your new school.

STUDENT EDUCATIONAL RECORDS

According to Illinois state law, a non-custodial parent has the same rights as a custodial parent, and has the right to copies of notices, calendars, conferences, report cards, and other school communications unless a court issues an order limiting those rights. MEDICATION PROCEDURES

Medication will not be administered by district personnel during the school day except when such doctor-prescribed medication during school hours is absolutely necessary for the critical health and well-being of the student. The primary responsibility for the administration of medication rests with the parent or guardian of the student.

If a parent or guardian requests that school personnel administer prescribed medication to their child during the school hours, one of the following criteria must be met:

  1. The student would be unable to attend school if the medication were not given.

  2. The student needs to take the medication for a condition that could be life threatening if the medication were not given to them.

  3. The student is unable to self-administer because of an identified disability.

  4. The parent requests the medication be given by the school personnel and the medication is long term (over 14 days).

Students who are eligible for administration of medication by school personnel will be given their medication by a certified school nurse, administrator, or other certified staff member designated by the building administrator. In an emergency, medications may be administered by any district employee.

A parent or guardian may choose to have their child self-administer the medication.

Specific policies regarding administration are:

  3. The medication must be brought to the school office in a pharmaceutical container labeled with the student's name, name of the medication, the dosage and all pertinent instructions. A maximum of a one (1) week supply of medication may be sent to school at any one time. The container should be sent home with the student at the end of each week.
  4. The school must store the medication in a locked cabinet.
  5. The school must maintain a written record of any medication dispensed. Such record must list student's name, name of medication, time it was administered and by whom.
  6. The student's parent or guardian must renew written orders for continuing medication at the beginning of each school year, whenever the medication or its dosage is changed, and when asked to do so by the school nurse.
