Support Services

Our team consists of professionals with a variety of backgrounds and specialties. We strive to work in a collaborative manner with our colleagues in the school and with parents to provide support for all students. Support Services at May Watts are provided in a cross disciplinary manner. Members of the team work together with teachers and other professionals in order to determine student needs and to address those needs.

Building Support Facilitators/Supported Education

The Building Support Facilitators work to coordinate services for many students with special needs within the building. Students who require a significant amount of support in order to succeed in the classroom are a part of our Supported Education Program. Services are provided through the Facilitators, Teaching Assistants, and other professionals. Weekly meetings are held in order to plan and problem solve in a collaborative manner. Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings monthly.

A major component of the Supported Education Program is the support provided by the Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants work with teachers and facilitators to modify curriculum, provide academic support and foster confidence and independence for our students. In addition to supporting our special needs students, Teaching Assistants are often able to provide support in a variety of ways throughout the classroom.

Supported Education students also receive services from a variety of other professionals. These may include the speech-language pathologist, social worker, occupational therapist, physical therapist adapted P.E. teacher, hearing itinerant, vision itinerant and others.

Along with coordinating services for Supported Education Students and supervising Teaching Assistants, the Building Support Facilitators work with the Student Support Services Team and with teachers to prepare all students to learn.

School Psychologist

The School Psychologist at May Watts tailors services to the particular needs of each child and each situation. These services would include providing consultation to teachers, parents and administrators about issues involving learning and behavior, providing assessment to address individual student needs, helping in the development of plans for intervention and prevention, and working with building leadership toward overall school improvement.

ESL

The English as a Second Language Program assists students as they acquire English language skills. The program provides support to the student in many academic areas including vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, writing and classroom curriculum. There also are some cultural and social issues that arise.

The program is designed as a pull-out program so that individualized instruction can be developed. This is a support program to help the student gain skills that are needed, develop confidence in using the language, and acquire knowledge needed for academics and socialization.

Students are screened through the Home Language Survey and other ESL testing materials designed to show if there is an ESL need and where that need lies. The ESL Specialist determines how to meet the student’s individual needs by working closely with the classroom teachers and students. A student may also be referred for screening by any member of the staff.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapist works with students that have fine motor, visual motor, or sensory processing deficits that interfere with their ability to access the education. Occupational therapy services are provided through direct services and/or consultative services. Education of school personnel regarding specific student need is provided. In addition, the Occupational Therapist attends Supported Education meetings to ensue carryover of recommendations throughout the team.
